A GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STUDYING MEDICINE IN GREECE

In this article, we will look at all the things one should consider before making the decision to apply to a university in Greece. We focus on informing you about things like application procedures, fees, entrance exams and so on. 

OVERVIEW 

  • The medical course in Greece takes about six years to complete.  
  • With about half being focused on the pre-clinical aspect of the course, and the other half being clinical. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

  • To study medicine in Greece, you will be required to pass a Greek language proficiency test. If you fail this test, you will be required to take a Greek language course on top of your medical course. 
  • You will also be required to prove your English speaking and understanding abilities, by sitting the TOEFL or IELTS tests. To pass you are expected to get at least 6.5 on the IELTS test. And 570 on the paper-based TOEFL test or 90 on the internet-based TOEFL test. 
  • Overall if you qualify to study at university in your home country then you qualify to study at university in Greece. Meaning, for example, if you have completed your A-Levels in the UK then that qualifies you to apply to university in Greece.  
  • However, applying for medicine means you are expected to have studied science-related subjects in your higher education. The required grades differ depending on the university you are applying to. But overall, you are expected to have achieved well in your studies to be offered a place. 
  • Additionally, you will be required to prove your level of knowledge to the university you have applied to by taking an entrance exam. 

ENTRANCE EXAM  

  • In Greece, to be accepted to university you will need to complete the State Panhellenic Examinations.  
  • These consist of two parts. First, you will be tested on your basic knowledge of the subjects you have studied.  
  • And in the second part, you will be tested on specific knowledge relating to the course you are applying to. 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE 

  • When applying for university, you can do so through the Hellenic Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs.  
  • You will be requested to submit documentation to prove your identity and certificates to show your educational achievements.  
  • Additional documents will be required but this will depend on what the university you are applying to will ask from you. 
  • All the documents that you will be asked to submit will need to be translated into Greek. 

APPLICATION DEADLINE 

  • The deadline to apply to university in Greece is around middle July.  
  • However, this might differ for your specific university, so we recommend double-checking this on their website. 

APPLICATION TIMELINE 

You will usually find out if you have been accepted in August. 

FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 

If you’re coming from outside of Europe, you will be paying around £1,256 per year. 

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 

  • The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a scholarship that will gift the recipient with a single payment of £8,375.  
  • The criteria for this scholarship is that you need to have never studied an undergraduate course before, be a holder of a non-Greek passport, need to be under 27 years old, and have completed high school with a score of at least 90%.
